ACT Security Industry Act 2003 Amendments

On 24 August 2010, the ACT Legislative Assembly passed amendments to the Security Industry Act 2003.  These amendments provide for the expansion of the current suitability criteria and pre-requisites for  security employee applicants wishing to carry on a security activity as a body guard, or a crowd controller or a guard to patrol, watch or protect property. The aim of these amendments is to give applicants a better understanding of their workplace entitlements and responsibilities under laws in force in the Territory.  It is anticipated that the new laws will commence within the next three months. Drink Safe Precincts to offer local solutions to local problems

The Queensland State Government will declare special Drink Safe Precincts (DSP) in key locations across Queensland under a $4.2m plan to counter alcohol-related violence.

Police numbers will increase during peak times in some areas and better supervised taxi zones, more support services, and the creation of special safe zones will all feature in the new precincts.

The Government will also legislate for new powers to ban people committing alcohol-related violence from the areas and it will become mandatory for pubs and clubs to offer free drinking water to patrons. The use of ID scanners by clubs will also be supported under the plan. Read More

 

National Occupational Licensing Laws

The Occupational Licensing National Law Bill 2010 was introduced to the Victorian Legislative Assembly and passed its first reading on 10 August, 2010. Victoria is the host jurisdiction for the National Licensing System (NLS) legislation. Following the passing of the legislation in Victoria, all remaining states and territories will pass legislation that makes the Victorian legislation law in their jurisdiction. To progress this national initiative the bill must now also pass the second reading in the Victorian Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council. Surveillance in Public Places final report released

The Victorian Attorney-General has tabled the Commission's Surveillance in Public Places: Final Report in Parliament on 12 August 2010.
The report responds to the growing use and sophistication of surveillance technologies. It provides recommendations to modernise surveillance laws and promote the responsible use of surveillance devices in public places. 
The report completes a two-stage inquiry into the widespread use of privacy-invasive technologies. The Commission's Workplace Privacy: Final Report was the first stage and proposed the creation of workplace privacy legislation to regulate potentially privacy-invasive acts and practices in the workplace.

Victorian Private Security Amendment Bill 2010

The Private Security Amendment Bill 2010 was presented for its 2nd reading in the Victorian Parliament on the 29th July 2010. The Bill amends the Private Security Act 2004 to implement a nationally agreed approach through COAG to the regulation of the private security industry. Read More
